Located within the historical town of Jugra, Masjid Sultan Alauddin is one of the state’s oldest mosques. Also known as Masjid Alaeddin and Masjid Bandar, it was built around the same time as Istana Bandar (Bandar Palace) in the early 1900s and officiated by a former Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Alaeddin Suleiman Shah Ibni Raja Muda Musa.

It is believed that the design of this yellow mosque originated from the Deli Kingdom in Medan, Sumatera. A fine example of classic Moorish architecture, the mosque shares some similarities with another heritage landmark, the Sultan Abdul Samad Building in Kuala Lumpur, particularly in its arches. The interior is decorated with Qur’anic inscriptions and intricate wood carvings.

Masjid Sultan Alaluddin was gazetted as an Ancient Monument and Historical Site under the Antiquities Act 1976 in 1980 and registered as a ‘Warisan’ (Heritage) under the National Heritage Act 2005 in 2008. Within its vicinity are other ancient attractions such as the Royal Mausoleum, the Jugra Lighthouse and the ruins of Istana Jugra.
