Repair work on Gubbun mosque to start in January

Maldivian Islamic Minister Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed said on Saturday that repair work on the mosque built by Qatar government in Hulhumale’ would start in January, 2015 as complaints grow over the building’s leaky roof.

The minister said that the repair work would take a huge sum on money, and that the money given by Qatar government to repair the roof of Gubbun Mosque would not cover the total cost.

Minister Dr Shaheem said that the government had received the $ 50, 000 given by Qatar to do the repair work, and that the ministry would find a way to cover the rest of the cost, even if it was via State budget.

The minister said that repairing the mosque would be a difficult feat, given that a large part of the mosque was roofed.  He said that changes that needed to be brought to the mosque could only be identified after surveying the building.

“We have asked City Council to send details to the ministry after having a technical team identify how the repair work needs to be carried out. They were asked before the last month of Ramadan, but they haven’t sent in the report yet,” he said.

The leaky roof results in large number of worshippers getting drenched during rainy days. The leaky roof is also playing haywire with the buildings electricity
