Salafist-affiliated mosque targeted in southeast Lebanon

SIDON, Lebanon: Unknown assailants smashed the glass windows of a mosque in Shebaa, in southeast Lebanon, overnight Thursday, after an aborted attempt to set it on fire, security sources told The Daily Star

Fuel was found spilled at the entrance of the mosque belonging to a Salafist charity association, Ishraq al-Nour al-Khayriya, in an apparent attempt to torch the place of worship, the sources said.

In addition to the mosque, the glass windows of the house of a founder of the association, Abu Jihad al-Zoghbi, were also smashed, apparently by the same attackers, the sources added.

Police launched an investigation into the two incidents that clearly targeted the charity which provides assistance to some 6,000 Syrian refugees sheltering in Shebaa, after they had fled from the Syrian border town of Beit Jin, which lies some 12 kilometers east of Shebaa.
